(CNN) —A judge in Russia has  left Brittney Griner’s verdict  in place, upholding on Tuesday the US basketball star’s conviction on drug smuggling charges and reducing only slightly her nine-year prison sentence. Griner’s sentence will be modified to count the time she spent in pretrial detention after her February 17 arrest at a Moscow airport, the judge ruled, with each day in pretrial custody counting as 1.5 days toward her prison sentence. It was not immediately clear exactly how much that would reduce the sentence. The decision came after  an appeal hearing  Tuesday at which Griner, whom the US considers wrongfully detained, again apologized as she and her attorneys asked the court for a more lenient sentence, arguing the verdict was unfair and unjustified under Russian law. The identity of a woman found dead at a Columbia apartment complex has been released by Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford. ABC Columbia News (FILE) COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The identity of a woman found dead at a Columbia apartment complex has been released by Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford. According to Coroner Rutherford, the victim was 27 year-old Sidney William of Columbia. On October 21 around 9:00 p.m., deputies responded to the 3400 block of Kay Street after receiving reports of a shooting, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. When deputies arrived, they found William with a gunshot wound located inside of an apartment. EMS arrived on scene and pronounced her deceased. Deputies found damage to the walls of the apartment as if the shooter was outside at the time. In a release, Coroner Rutherford says, “We will continue working with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to fully investigate this homicide.” The post UP...

(WOLO)— South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced that a Sumter County man has been sentenced for distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material. Mark Christopher Gainey is expected to serve nine years in prison. Authorities say Gainey plead guilty to one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor in the 2nd Degree for distribution of child sexual abuse materials and one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor in the 3rd Degree for possession of sexual materials, in Sumter County. In a release, the Attorney General’s office says in 2015, a special investigator was sent child sexual abuse material by the defendant via a file-sharing network. A Lexington County man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for sex crimes against a minor, says SC Attorney General Alan Wilson. LEXINGTON, S.C. (WOLO)— A Lexington County man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for sex crimes against a minor, says SC Attorney General Alan Wilson. Randy Carroll Rawl is charged with one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor, 2nd degree, and one count of Criminal Solicitation of a Minor. According to a release, the arrest follows an investigation led by the Lexington County Sheriff’s office where they discovered evidence that Rawl propositioned a 15 year old for sexual activity, engaged in sexual activity with the victim, and exchanged sexual texts with the minor. Authorities were asked to investigate after the victim’s mother discovered text massages between her son and Rawl. The unlawful activities occurred in 2019. Rawl admitted to speaking with the victim and traveling to the teen’s home to engage in sexual activity....

The eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. Griner, 32, was not at the Moscow Regional Court hearing but appeared via video link from a penal colony outside the capital where she is held. At her trial, Griner admitted to having the canisters in her luggage but testified she packed them inadvertently in her haste to make her flight and had no criminal intent.
